About the book

A book about the practical side of finite element analysis for structural engineers.

It offers the best practical methods and guidelines for the development and validation of finite element models, illustrated with around 100 examples of the different modeling techniques.

Who this book is for

This book is intended for all structural engineers who want to solve problems using FEA: both experienced engineers and students who want to know what FEA is, how it works, and how to use good modeling practices to develop accurate and reliable finite element models.

The reader is assumed to have a basic understanding of physics, and in particular of statics and strength of materials.

Why this book

While there is much published information on finite element theory, there is little on practical modeling techniques for mechanical engineers. Engineers often learn basic FEA rules from textbooks, but most learn FEA through years of experience developing finite element models.

In this book, I do not explain how to use FEA software. I present the best practical methods and guidelines for the development and validation of finite element models.

How to read it

The book is organized so that you don't have to read it from the first page to the last: you are free to pick out information according to your needs. Some information is repeated in chapters designed to stand alone, while other information sits in a single chapter referenced by others.

If you are starting out in FEA, I recommend reading the entire book in chapter order to understand all the ins and outs.

This first edition covers static, buckling, and modal analysis, for linear and nonlinear structural behavior.
